Modeling & Rigging 4 Legs Robot

April 12th, 2008

For this tutorial of I will explain how to I modeling and rigging for character with 4 legs. I telling that tutorial which I make only as reference for you, thus I hope you can find your own way to make animation 3d. But, if you fitted in with my way, you can apply it.

For modeling, I don’t make picture sketch, because I find difficulties in drawing robot, if you can draw robot, you earns share to me. Picture hereunder possibly can become reference for you.

I start modeling robot body with polygon primitive like picture hereunder.

If you wish to follow my 3d model, you can follow wireframe picture hereunder.

For modeling part of robot leg same as robot body modeling.

This is result from modeling 4 legs robot.

For skeleton your joints can see picture hereunder. All joints I snap (press and hold “v”) to rotate pivot from sphere.

This tips from me, if you wish to look for midpoint from object. Go to Display > Transform Display, then select command which you to wish, for this tutorial I choose rotate pivot.

Create curve for leg controller and body controller. Select all curves then go to modify > freeze transformations. This would be useful at the time of you later movement controller, you can return position of controller to position of default like the existing.

Applies IK handle tool to make IK handle. Select leg1 and leg3 to apply IK Handle tool.

Then, applies IK handle tool and select leg 3 and leg4.

Select IK2, IK3 and controller curve (must be successive) then parent (press p). For other legs of you can repeat above ways.

For controller part of eye. Create curve for controller. Then select “eye_ctrl” beforehand then select “eye_joint” then constrain aim.

Select eye_ctrl then select body_ctrl and parent.

Result of it’s would as in under this. Last duty is you must parent objects (body, legs and eye) to joint as according to its position.

Create big curve (not big is OK) and parent all controller curve to its. Function of this big curve is for move your character position.

This is result from animation. Thanks has joint in my tutorial.
