At this Maya tutorial I will show how to modeling garbage can. Actually this simple, this tutorial is including basic tutorial. You only did extrude, add edges and extract polygon.
To start this tutorial, as usual I name some parts that you easy to understand my intention later. (Sees picture below).

Firstly create cylinder with subdivision 10 to make body part.

Select all vertexes underside body part and scale it down.

Select faces on top body part.

Delete all faces.
