Learn Maya 3D Nonlinear Deformers Part V – Twist Deformer
June 5th, 2008Now we will learn about Twist Deformer. Twist is tool which very simple among other nonlinear deformers. Actually I seldom apply twist for modeling or animation. But I have example using twist for modeling and hopefully this example earns good for you.
Twist has some attributes, that is:
- Envelope
- Start Angle
- End Angle
- Low Bound
- High Bound
Explanation
Create a cube polygon.

Select the cube and choose twist deformer.

If you set start angle to positive or negative value hence top of cube will become axis (sees picture).

If you set end angle to positive or negative value hence bottom of cube will become axis (sees picture).

For Modeling
For example of modeling us would modeling an ice cream cone with twist and combined with flare.
Create a polygon cube.
Set height to 3
Subdivision width to 4
Subdivision height to 10
Subdivision depth to 4
Select cube and choose twist deformer.

Set start angle to 300.

Select the cube and choose flare deformer.
Set end flare x and z to 0.1.
Set curve to 2.

Last of you can make ice cream handle (I am ordinary calls biscuit handle) by using cylinder polygon.

This is result from modeling an ice cream cone.
