How to Import Image Reference to Maya

Today we will learn how to import image reference to Maya. It’s very simple tutorial and I hope this can help you. There any two ways for import your image reference:

  1. From polygon or NURBS plane and you import your image there.
  2. From image plane.

We will learn both of these.

But before we import image reference one think you must to know is information about height and width size of your image reference. This is example for this tutorial.

Image Reference

Remember this is just an example you don’t need same size between front and side image reference, but I always make same just height size (just my habit).

First Way

Step 1

Create Polygon plane for front image.

Set rotation X to 90

Set height to 15

Set width to 10

Step 2

Create Polygon plane for side image.

Set rotation X an Y to 90

Set height to 15

Set width to 10

Step 3

Add material to your polygon plane, just right click on polygon plane > assign new material > Lambert. I use Lambert because Lambert no have spectacular ( you can experiment with other materials if you want).

Step 4

Import your image
